Trade sizing

Profit and loss calculator

The profit or loss on a trade is the price move multiplied by the position size. A buy gains when the price rises and a sell gains when it falls. This calculator shows the move in pips and the money result converted into your account currency, before costs.

Direction

Calculated from ECB euro reference rates, 2026-10-23. A daily reference rate, not a live quote.

How it is calculated

  • Move = (close price − open price) × direction (+1 buy, −1 sell)
  • Profit = move × contract size × lots × quote-to-account rate

Worked example

Buy 2 lots of EUR/USD at 1.1000, close at 1.1050, USD account: 0.0050 × 100,000 × 2 = 1,000.00 USD, a 50-pip gain. The same move on a sell is a 1,000.00 USD loss.

Assumptions and practical examples

Direction changes the sign: selling one standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000 and buying it back at 1.0950 gives an illustrative gross gain of 500 USD; the same prices on a buy give a 500 USD loss. This assumes a 100,000-unit contract and a USD account.

The result is price-movement arithmetic, not a broker execution result. Spread, commissions and overnight financing are separate. Account-currency conversion also changes the cash amount when the quote currency differs.

Questions

Does the result include costs?

No. Spread, commission and overnight swap are not included. Use the spread cost and swap calculators to estimate them.

How do I calculate a loss?

Enter the price where the trade closed. If the price moved against the trade, the result is negative.

Why convert to the account currency?

The profit is earned in the quote currency. If your account is in another currency, it is converted at the exchange rate when the trade closes.

Results are estimates for education; your broker's contract specification and prices decide the real values. Trading leveraged products carries a high risk of losing money.
