Chart levels

Pivot point calculator

Pivot points are price levels calculated from the previous day's (or week's) high, low and close. Traders watch them as possible support and resistance. The methods differ in how they weight the close and how far apart they place the levels; DeMark also uses the open.

Needed only for DeMark pivots.

How it is calculated

  • Classic: P = (H + L + C) ÷ 3; R1 = 2P − L; S1 = 2P − H; R2 = P + (H − L); S2 = P − (H − L)
  • Woodie: P = (H + L + 2C) ÷ 4, levels as classic
  • Camarilla: R1…R4 = C + (H − L) × 1.1 ÷ 12, 6, 4, 2 (S levels subtract)
  • Fibonacci: R/S = P ± (H − L) × 0.382, 0.618, 1.000
  • DeMark: X depends on close vs open; P = X ÷ 4; R1 = X ÷ 2 − L; S1 = X ÷ 2 − H

Worked example

High 1.1100, low 1.0900, close 1.1000 (classic): P 1.10000, R1 1.11000, S1 1.09000, R2 1.12000, S2 1.08000.

Assumptions and practical examples

Use the same completed price period and session boundary for each method. With illustrative high 1.1100, low 1.0900 and close 1.1000, both the Classic and Woodie central pivot are 1.1000; their equality here follows from those symmetric inputs, not a general rule.

Camarilla and Fibonacci use different distance multipliers; DeMark also uses the relationship between open and close. Choose the method you intend to examine rather than mixing levels from different conventions. A New York close and a UTC close may produce different input prices and levels.

Questions

Which period's prices should I use?

For daily pivots use the previous day's high, low and close; for weekly pivots use the previous week's.

Which method is most used?

This tool shows Classic, Woodie, Camarilla, Fibonacci and DeMark calculations. They use different formulas; compare the method and session inputs with those configured on your charting platform.

Why do my platform's pivots differ?

Platforms close the day at different times (for example 17:00 New York or midnight UTC), which changes the high, low and close.

Results are estimates for education; your broker's contract specification and prices decide the real values. Trading leveraged products carries a high risk of losing money.
